Blate Meaning:
You may have a few plates hanging around your kitchen, but what you might not have is a set of “blates,” the trendy new dinnerware that’s the perfect hybrid of bowl and plate. These ceramic “blates,” as they’re affectionately called on TikTok, are deep enough to house pasta, stews and other savory liquids but shallow enough for salads, soups and other grain-based dishes. Plus, they stack nicely, freeing up space in your cabinets and drawers for a little more room for other kitchen essentials.
This week, a flurry of blate -spotting on Twitter led us to discover that this dinnerware item is now available at Target, CB2 and Wayfair, among others. And, in case you needed another reason to hop on the blates train, these chic options are all just as affordable as your trusty old plate set.

A guid Scots word, blate means shy or timid and can also be used to describe crops that have failed to thrive after being broughd. It can also be used to describe people who are slow or unmotivated. When my primary school pupils were slow to answer my questions because they weren’t doing their homework, I’d call them blate.
The OED has seven different meanings for blate, five of which are labelled obsolete. It can also be found as bleat and blait in the Scottish and northern English dialects, as well as Middle English bleth, bleath (“timid, soft”), from Old English blaitaz (“pale, livid, ghastly”), from Proto-Germanic *blaitaz (“pale, discoloured”) and Middle High German blauthaz (“weak, timid, void”).
